Are Credit Cards, Debit Cards and Bank Accounts Safe With Proximity?

Proximity processes payments through Stripe, using industry standard practices and encryption to keep your data safe. In fact, your payment information is sent directly to Stripe from your browser, bypassing Proximity servers entirely. Our system and Stripe are both designed so that Proximity never needs to see your account numbers. This means that your payment information is stored and accessible only by Stripe and protected by their PCI Service Provider Level 1 security.

How do payments work?

When you do something that results in a charge on the Proximity Network, one of two paths is taken:

If you do not have a payment source on file

  1. You will be asked to enter your credit card, debit card or bank account information to complete your transaction.
  2. Your browser sends your sensitive information directly to Stripe—completely bypassing Proximity servers—using strong, industry-standard encryption.
  3. Stripe sends us a secure token, usable only by Proximity, that represents your payment method.
  4. We store that token in our system and associate it with your customer record in Stripe
  5. We ask Stripe to create a charge using this token and the amount of your purchase.
  6. We generate an invoice and payment is deducted from your account.

If you do have a payment source on file

  1. We retrieve the stored token representing your payment source.
  2. We ask Stripe to create a charge using this token and the amount of your purchase.
  3. We generate an invoice and payment is deducted from your account.

These Stripe tokens can only be used by Proximity by pairing them with a secret key that only Proximity and Stripe have access to. In the extremely unlikely event that someone were to find your token, it would be completely useless to them and could not be used to find your account numbers or charge your accounts. Proximity uses industry best practices to secure and keep our secret key safe.
